Ex-Midland Railway 2F 0-6-0 No 3168 is seen traversing the down middle road between Platforms 1 and 2 with an ex-Midland 20 ton brake van coupled to its tender on 31st May 1949. Built in 1887 at Derby works No 3168 would be retired within a few weeks of the photograph being withdrawn from Aston shed in June 1949 to be scrapped at Derby works soon afterwards. The brake van was the final type of standard Midland Railway brake van to be built and this vehicle was built at Derby in 1923, the year the LMS was established. This 23ft 3in long vehicle was originally vacuum fitted and had a 12 foot wheel base.
