Ex-LMS 4F 0-6-0 No 43875 is seen leaving Platform 9 as it banks a heavy express train through the tunnel on the West Suburban Railway route to Kings Norton on 14th May 1955. Birmingham station still reflected pre-grouping working practices up to the time of rebuilding with the former LNWR and Midland pilot engines still being supplied to each pre-grouping section of the station by Monument and Saltley sheds respectively. Built at Derby works in 1918 No 43875 was a Saltley locomotive and had just one year left in service as it was withdrawn in May 1956 from Saltley shed before being scrapped at Derby works soon afterwards.
