An unidentified ex-LMS 4P 4-4-0 Compound locomotive is seen standing at the East end of Platform 8 alongside No 2 Signal Cabin. The last digit is indistinct but the other numbers are 4107X meaning it was built between September 1924 and November 1924 when Nos 41071 to 41079 were constructed at Derby works. One hundred and ninety-five locomotives were built by the LMS, adding to the forty-five Midland Railway 1000 Class locomotives, to which they were almost identical. The most obvious difference is that the driving wheel diameter was reduced from 7ft 0in on the Midland locomotive to 6ft 9in on the LMS version. The LMS continued the Midland numbering from 1045 to 1199 and then started in the lower block of 900-39. After nationalisation in 1948, BR added 40000 to their numbers so they became 40900-39 and 41045-199.
