Ex-Midland Railway 3F 0-6-0 No 43523 is seen working in Fish
Sidings with the Midland Carriage siding behind circa 1954. Railway travel
revolutionised the diet of city dwellers from the middle of the 19th century as
they could transport perishables, fish and milk long distances in a very short
time. Birmingham Fish Market was the destination of the fish from New Street's
Fish Dock and the surrounding area was instantly recognised by the all
pervading smell of fish. A Member of the Midland Railway's 1873 Class No 43523
was built by Neilson & Company circa 1897 and was to remain in service
until September 1960 when it was withdrawn from Saltley shed to be scrapped in
September 1960 by Gorton works.
