British Railways Class 5 4-6-0 No 73141 is piloting ex-LMS 5XP 4-6-0 No 45626 'Seychelles' on a heavy Bristol bound express circa 1958. The use of double-headed trains was not unusual and either reflected a heavy load behind the tender or severe undulating routes as found in the West Country where this train was bound. Above No 45626's tender is Signal Box No 4 which controlled the routes in to and out of the West side of the 'Midland' section of New Street station. Riddles 4-6-0 No 73141 was fitted with Caprotti valve gear and was built at Derby works in December 1956 and remained in service until July 1967 when it was withdrawn from Patricroft shed to be scrapped in January 1968 by J Cashmore of Newport. Stanier 4-6-0 No 45626 was built at Crewe works in November 1934 and it remained in service until October 1965 when it was withdrawn from Holbeck shed in Leeds to be scrapped in January 1966 by TW Ward of Killamarsh.
