Ex-LMS 5XP 4-6-0 No 45647 'Sturdee' is seen about to enter
Worcester Street tunnel at the head of the up 'Midlander' to Euston in
September 1956. The locomotive and coaching stock are relatively clean and in
colour shows the corporate colours of British Railways. The Maroon livery on
the coaching stock was the second livery adopted as the first, Carmine and
Cream and often described as 'Blood and Custard', was found to weather too
quickly and to show the dirt too readily. Stanier 4-6-0 No 45647 is resplendent
in Brunswick Green express, British Railways' livery adopted in 1948 for
express passenger locomotives. Built at Crewe works in January 1935 No 45647
remained in service until April 1967 when it was withdrawn from Holbeck shed in
Leeds to be scrapped in September 1967 by J Cashmore of Great Bridge.
