A 3 Car Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Company
Diesel Multiple Unit set stands at Platform 8 on the 6:15pm New Street to
Leicester local stopping service on Monday 14th April 1958. This class of DMU
were the first of three classes built for British Railways by the Birmingham
Carriage & Wagon Company based at Smethwick, in association with the Drewry
Car Company. The initial order was for just four three-car sets, delivered to
Longsight shed in 1957. Within two years, there were 302 Class 104 vehicles of
six different car types, forming two, three and four-car sets allocated
throughout the London Midland and North Eastern depots.
