Ex-LMS 5XP Jubilee class No 45649 'Hawkins' is seen standing
at the West end of Platform 9 with the 6 37pm service to Worcester on Thursday
7th September 1961. The fireman now climbing aboard into the cab has just
removed one of the head code lamps and set the remaining lamp at the top of the
smokebox indicating that its a stopping service. Built at Crewe works in
January 1935 No 45649 was to remain in service until October 1963 when it was
withdrawn from Derby shed to be scrapped in November 1963 by Crewe works.
Standing light engine in the middle road between Platforms 9 and 10 is ex-LMS
5MT 4-6-0 No 44805 which was built at Derby works in June 1944 and was to
remain in service until September 1967 when it was withdrawn from Crewe South
shed to be scrapped in January 1968 by J Cashmore of Great Bridge.
