BR Period Locomotives: lnwrbns_br1995
Another view of ex-LMS 2P 4-4-0 No 40646 on the Stephenson
Locomotive Society special on 14th April 1962. Officially to have been retired
from Bescot shed on Saturday 12th May 1962, No 40646's retirement was delayed
by one day to allow the Railway Correspondents & Travel Society's 'East
Midlander Tour No 5' to Darlington go ahead. This tour departed Nottingham
Victoria and was double-headed with No 40646 paired with ex-Southern Railways
4-4-0 'Schools class' No 30925 'Cheltenham'. The 1950s and 1960s was the age of
the tours and specials as the Beaching cuts combined with the Modernisation
plan saw branch lines being closed and classes of steam locomotives being
decimated and made extinct.
