A Craven Three-Car DMU is seen standing empty at the West end of Platform 8 alongside the remains of No 4 Signal Cabin on 24th October 1964. The leading unit is numbered M50770 which reminds the author of his own recollection at the time of the transition from steam to diesel power. Having spent many pleasant and happy years taking the numbers of steam locomotives it was only natural we started to do the same with its replacements. Very quickly it became apparent that taking down the numbers of DMUs was no different taking down the number of the coaches behind the steam locomotives and the practice was quickly stopped. Spotting Diesel locomotives continued for a while but they lacked the character of steam and when the author became interested in girls this was the end of his train spotting days.
