BR Period Locomotives: lnwrbns_br2001
Ex-LNWR 0-6-2T No 58900 is again seen resting between duties
on the up middle road between Platforms 3 and 4 whilst acting as station pilot
in 1952. The LNWR pilot engines were provided by Monument Lane probably as a
result of Monument Lane's historical precedence over Aston shed. Monument Lane
was opened as a consequence of the need to find another location to Curzon
Street shed which was evolving into a major goods yard after the opening of New
Street station. Ex-LNWR 0-6-2T No 58903 was the last of this class to serve as
pilot engines at New Street with 0-6-0 locomotives undertaking this duty until
they too were replaced by 2-6-2T locomotives.
