Ex-LNWR 2F 0-6-2T 'Coal Tank' No 58900 is seen standing on the up middle road between Platforms 3 and 4 whilst engaged on station pilot duties moving coaching stock on 25th August 1953. Built as LNWR No 156 at Crewe works in September 1884 No 58900 had the distinction of being part of the centenary celebrations at Darlington where it ran in the cavalcade as LMS No 7699. Most 'Coal Tanks' saw out their last days on local stopping trains and as pilot locomotives and No 58900 was no different being withdrawn from Shrewsbury shed in October 1954 to be scrapped by Crewe works. In this view the first British Railway's emblem can be seen following the lettering 'British Railways'. At first the design was applied so that the crest on both sides of the locomotive faced to the front of the locomotive. The was ruled not to be correct by the keepers of Heraldry matters who ruled that the design must face one direction only - to the left.
