Ex-LMS 5XP 4-6-0 No 45709 'Implacable' stands on an up Wolverhampton to Euston express passenger service circa 1957. Built as LMS No 5709 at Crewe works in June 1936, it was renumbered as No 45709 by British Railways in January 1949 which it carried until November 1963 when it was officially withdrawn from 5A Crewe North shed although two months prior it was allocated to 2E Saltley shed. It was one of very many other locomotives to have been scrapped by Cashmores of Great Bridge. John Turner writes, allocated at the time of the photograph to Bushbury shed, I was told that when 5709 was first allocated to the Birmingham area it was regarded by local enthusiasts as a wonderful and rare Jubilee - it soon became just another local "wreck".
