Ex-LMS 4-6-0 5MT No M4840 stands at the head of an up express service on 21st March 1948. The Stanier 'Black Five' was built by Crewe works in October 1944 and didn't receive its British Railway's number, No 44840, until November 1950. It carried this number until November 1967 when it was officially withdrawn from service at 8C Speke Junction although it was allocated to 8H Mollington Street, Birkenhead three months earlier.
