Ex-Midland Railway 0-6-4T No 2029 stands at the East end of
the up face of Platform 5 on a Birmingham to Leicester local passenger service
circa 1930. Commonly known as a 'Flatiron' because the side tanks were
reminiscent of the shape of a housewife's iron that were heated on a stove, the
class was not considered a successful design but despite this had a working
life of some thirty years. Built at Derby works in July 1907 No 2029 remained
in service until January 1937 when it was withdrawn from Saltley shed to be
scrapped shortly afterwards by Derby works.
