LMS Period Locomotives: lnwrbns_lms488
Ex-Midland Railway Kirtley 2-4-0 No 1 is seen resplendent
and gleaming in its LMS Crimson Lake livery whilst acting as West end pilot
circa 1928. There was little room on the locomotive to carry its LMS badge and
this has been placed in front of the driver's cut out on the cab side. This
class of locomotive was originally used on express services but by the turn of
the century the increased loads meant that they were down graded to local
passenger services and ultimately to acting as pilot engines. The No 3 shed
plate fixed to the smokebox door meant that the locomotive was assigned to
Saltley shed where No 1 was to remain in service for another two years before
being withdrawn in 1930 for scrapping.
