LMS 4MT 2-6-4T No 2351 is seen standing at the West end of Platform 2 whilst at the head of a Wolverhampton local passenger service on 7th May 1938. Across the platform standing at Platform 1 is a LMS 4P 4-4-0 Compound No 1164 with an express service to Wolverhampton. Built at Derby works in June 1929 No 2351 was to remain in service until August 1962 when it was withdrawn from Birkenhead shed to be scrapped in May 1963 by J Cashmore of Great Bridge. Compound No 1164 was built by the North British Locomotive Company in September 1925 and it remained in service until October 1958 when it was withdrawn from Trafford Park in Manchester to be scrapped in June 1959 by TW Ward of Killmarsh. The delay in scrapping both engines after their withdrawal was indicative of the large numbers of locomotives being withdrawn to the point that scrapping facilities could not keep up with the number being withdrawn.
