LNWR 4-4-0 George the Fifth class No 1472 'Moor Hen' is seen light engine held by signals adjacent to No 5 Signal Cabin circa 1920. The driver is waiting to be given the road to reverse into Platform 2 to be attached to a northbound local passenger service to Wolverhampton and then on to Stafford. The photograph is taken from the west end of the long Stour Valley bay, a favourite spot for trainspotters as from here, one could also see the Midland trains running in and out of platforms 4, 5 and 6. Built at Crewe works in September 1911, No 1472 is seen above having been fitted with an experimental water heater although its not known how long the water heater was retained. Renumbered as LMS No 5371 in July 1927 and then placed on the duplicate list on 6th August 1936 as No 25371 it remained in service until on 4th October 1939 when it was withdrawn for scrapping at Crewe works.
