LNWR 4-4-0 Alfred the Great class No 1979 'Nelson' is seen fresh from the works standing on the up middle road between Platforms One and Two in August 1903. The shed plate, which can just be seen on the rear of the cab roof, records its home shed as being No 10 which was Aston shed. Built at Crewe works in August 1903, No 1979 was converted to a Benbow class locomotive in January 1907 and remained in service until August 1923 never to bear its LMS running number of No 5130.
