Close up of image 'lnwrbns_pg464' showing the locomotive crew of Midland Railway 4-4-0 No 547 checking that the locomotive is perfectly balanced on the 45 ft diameter turntable. Many turntables were, like the one above, operated manually and therefore it was important to balance the locomotive on the turntable as an imbalance would place more weight on one side requiring more effort to turn it. The single lamp positioned at the top of the smokebox indicates that the train has either just come off a local stopping passenger trip or that will be its next turn. Built at Derby works in May 1901 as a member of the MR's 483 class, No 547 remained in service until February 1953 when it was withdrawn from Kentish Town shed in London to be scrapped shortly afterwards by Derby works.
