Birmingham New Street Station: lnwrbns_str1310c
Close up of the 1950 plan showing the Midland Railway's
station offices and platform layout complete with its notorious fish sidings.
The extension provided a much better station layout with sufficient space and
accommodation for the extensive passenger facilities which were originally
designed for three classes of passengers. Shortly after opening the Midland
Railway pioneered the concept of just having two classes of rail travel, First
and Third Class, with Second Class facilities being withdrawn. The use of the
terminology First and Third Class remained on British Railways until the
1960s.
