Birmingham New Street Station: lnwrbns_str1767
Another view of the entrance from Station Street showing
posters advertising tickets to Aintree, Edinburgh and Bolton seen on 18th March
1954. British Railways obviously structured their excursion fares to reflect
the perceived wealth of their passengers as the cost of travelling to Aintree
on 27th March for the Grand National was 19 shillings and sixpence
(97½p). However the fare to Bolton for an Aston Villa away football
match on 20th March, which was within a mile or two the same distance, was
advertised at 11 shillings and sixpence (57½p). The third poster from
the right advertises fares to both Glasgow and Edinburgh at 62 shillings
(£3.10) and 64 shillings (£3.20) respectively.
