Birmingham New Street Station: lnwrbns_str1768
Looking towards the East end of the station and New Street
No 2 Signal Cabin from Platform 8 with numerous mail trollies evident on both
platforms. The steps leading down from the footbridge to Platform 7 as seen in
image 'lnwrbns_str406' can be seen on the
left. The 'Midland side' of the station unlike the 'North Western side'
remained undamaged by the Second World War and whilst it was dirty and very
grimy from the smoke of the many locomotives using the station it still had a
majesty that its 1960s successor could never match. The original station lasted
nearly one hundred and ten years whilst in its enlarged form it lasted some
eighty years. Its successor is due to be replaced after barely fifty years and
would have disappeared long before had the money been available.
