Signal Box which protected the 'Midland' portion of New Street station and the
timber bracket signals controlling departures to Derby. The Signal Box stood at
the end of the original Platform 5 (the LNWR named the entire island platform
as Platform 5) to be redesignated in 1946 as Platforms 8 for the right hand
platform face and Platform 9 for the left hand platform face. Immediately in
front of the signal box are the timber buffer stops for a short siding used by
pilot locomotives at the station during periods when the through lines were
being occupied.
