Close up of image 'lnwrbns_str1854' showing the extension's main building which provided both passenger and office facilities with the footbridge passing through its centre on the first floor. Beyond the footbridge and protected by the glazed roof was the entrance from Station Street which covered a roadway used by passengers arriving by hansom cab or their own carriage if they were rich enough. In the distance on the corner of the station is the Midland parcels offices. The spans of the extension were much smaller than the LNWR roof designed by Cowper being 58 ft and 67 ft at their widest point. Richard Foster states in his book on the station that the contractor for the extension was Messrs T Nelson of Carlisle whilst the subcontractor for the roof and iron work was Messrs Horton & Sons. In all 200,000 cubic yards of earth was excavated, and 380 tons of iron work and 2000 tons of timber were employed in its construction.
