Birmingham New Street Station: lnwrbns_str1855
Looking towards Stephenson Street from Navigation Street
bridge with the West end screen of the original New Street station on the
right. Above the screen is the end of Queens Hotel whilst the area of ground in
between the station and the hotel has been screened by placing tall advertising
hoardings. Richard Foster states that initially this area was occupied by a
stone mason whose temporary occupation lasted many years. Eventually in 1915
the area was cleared for the Queens Hotel's West wing extension. The Midland
Hotel was sited opposite the Queens Hotel and can be seen on the left with the
more ornate section being the entrance. The white building adjacent to the
Midland Hotel is an extension provided to the rear of the Midland Bank's 1869
premises whilst the clock tower stands above the Exchange.
