Birmingham New Street Station: lnwrbns_str1857
View from the Queens Hotel showing a typical busy sunny
afternoon scene at New Street station. Taken the same day in 1911 as image 'lnwrbns_str1858' the above photograph shows the
impact of the heavy tie bars added to strengthen the roof in 1906-7. Having a
flatter curve than the original structure they effectively of reducing the
feeling of spaciousness of the roof. Richard Foster states that, 'the new ties
consisted of flat sections with heavily bolted connections at the points where
they are suspended by double tie bolts from the original tie bolts (which were
circular in cross section).
