Birmingham New Street Station: lnwrbns_str1859a
Close up of image 'lnwrbns_str1859' showing a LNWR up
express train standing at Platform 1's through platform with New Street No 3
signal cabin perched above. The coaching stock of this period was compartmental
which meant that most had no toilet facilities aboard. The occasional First
class coach might have had a toilet shared between two compartments the rest
however were accommodated by the train having 'comfort stops' at regular
intervals throughout its journey. It was the introduction of corridor stock in
the late 19th and early 20th century that eventually provided the on board
facilities we accept as the norm today.
