Birmingham New Street Station: lnwrbns_str1868b
Close up of image 'lnwrbns_str1868' showing New Street No 2
Signal Box which was built and operated by the LNWR even though after 1889 it
only served Midland trains. The Signal Box was opened in 1885 to control
Midland trains arriving into the extension from Derby and for LNWR trains
arriving from the direction of London and Aston. The condition of the signal
box without any signs of soot or other smoke induced marks indicates that this
photograph must have been taken either at the time or just after the extension
was opened. Following the opening of the new South tunnel in 1896 No 2 signal
box was later extended to accommodate the larger frame required to operate the
extra signals and pointwork.
