Birmingham New Street Station: lnwrbns_str1869a
Close up of image 'lnwrbns_str1869' showing the wagons being
used on the remaining construction work which was still being undertaken a few
months after the station had been opened for traffic. The LNWR wagons were
carrying bricks and spoil and were marked on their sides for the benefit of the
illiterate work force with a diamond. The roof was built by using a bow girder
to carry the very heavy weight of the glazed panels. In all after the extension
was built the station covered 14½ acres double the size of the original
and of which 8 acres were glazed.
