Birmingham New Street Station: lnwrbns_str1874
An illustrated view of the interior of the Grand Station
viewed from the Wolverhampton end of Platform 3 with the Queens Hotel seen on
the left. Whilst the artist has captured the majesty of the then largest single
span roof in the world his perspective is a little out as evident by the height
of the passenger footbridge. The steps from the footbridge are drawn
incorrectly as they are shown to be dog-legged whereas whilst there was a
half-landing the steps were straight. The dark circles to the left of and in
front of the locomotive depict the turntables to be seen within the confines of
the station although the artist has not depicted connecting rails. There are
three roads depicted whilst in fact there were only two sets of tracks built
between Platform 3 and Platform 2 in the middle. Queens Street is to the right
on behind the columns eventually to become Queens Drive when the station was
extended in the 1880s.
