Birmingham New Street Station: lnwrbns_str1882
Looking towards Worcester Street tunnel with an unidentified
ex-LNWR 0-6-2T locomotive passing New Street No 1 Signal Box and a gang of
Permanent Way workers. This atmospheric scene was the result of the smoke and
soot building up on the glass roof which after the First World War was not
subjected to the vigorous cleaning that had prevailed during the first sixty to
seventy years of the station's life. On the right are the sidings located at
the East end of Platform 3 which was used for parcels traffic etc whilst above
the parcel coach a tarpaulin is stretched overhead suggesting some maintenance
work was being undertaken.
