The soldiers are carrying their kit bags and and their equipment which would indicate that they are new recruits on the way to their barracks before being sent to the Western Front in France. On the right is a Birmingham Corporation tram on the Kings Heath via Leopold Street route standing at the route's Hill Street terminus.
