Birmingham New Street Station: lnwrbns_str1906
Looking East along Platform One in November 1965 whilst
opposite Platform Three the erection of the new station continues apace. This
view shows how the stock of ex-emergency steel girders left over from the
Second World War were employed to provide temporary cover after the roof was
demolished. The narrow platforms compelled the authorities to support each end
of the girders from each platform with the roof covering ceasing over the
tracks to allow the smoke to dissipate. The temporary cover provided by the
girders lasted for twenty years not being replaced until the construction of
the 1960s design.
