Looking West along Platform 3 showing the final stages of the removal of the last two steel trusses of Cowper's great roof on 1st Jan 1947. The steelwork to the temporary canopies are being erected in parallel with the demolition of the roof. The demolition and building work created further problems for passengers who already had to negotiate the numerous piles of parcels and mail bags together with parcel trolleys on New Street's very narrow platforms. The new down colour light signal can be seen suspended from the footbridge as can the diamond rule 55 sign associated with the down direction signal on Platform No 4.
