Birmingham New Street Station: lnwrbns_str1921
Workmen erecting one of New Street station's twenty-five
loudspeakers deployed in October 1925 to improve station announcements. The
speakers were linked together in groups of up to 13 speakers so that the
announcer could both target certain sections of the station with his
announcements and also to reduce the level of noise in a covered station..
Ladies did not take over this role until the Second World War when in May 1941
21 year-old Miss Olive Dew, a former shop assistant, took over this role.
