A 1963 view along Station Street from its junction with John
Bright Street showing New Street station in the background. The red brick
building at the end of the street was the main building on platform 6 of the
Midland Railway side of the station. It housed booking offices as well as a
typical range of passenger facilities at a large station as well as a range of
railway offices originally including those for: superintendents, the District
Engineer, estate management and cashiers amongst others. The glazed canopy
attached to the front of this building covered the fish and meat sidings as
well as goods loading banks. The footbridge across the station passed through
the first floor of this building (below the segmental arch on its roof parapet)
before descending a staircase to its exit in Station Street. The booking
offices in the building were below the footbridge at platform level. Part of
the Midland side train shed can be seen to the right of the brick building.
