Looking East towards London and the rebuilt passenger
footbridge with Platform 3 on the right and the now widened platform 1 on the
left. It is helpful to remind visitors that designation 'Platform 1' applied to
both sides of the bay resulting in Platform 1 having three faces, two for the
bay and one for the through trains. Platform 2, which was much narrower and is
seen off-centre and to the right, had two faces with both for through trains.
Platform 3 on the far right had just the one face also for through traffic. The
bay on the left was allocated for Stour Valley trains and was originally built
with three roads including a storage siding in the middle. This arrangement
meant that Platform 1 was as narrow as platform 2 is to its right. During
rebuilding the second platform face from the left was moved further to the left
to occupy the original bay line resulting in the old central storage siding
becoming the new bay line.
