Birmingham New Street Station: lnwrbns_str410

An elevated view of Queens Drive at the junction with Hill Street showing the original gated entrance and a row of Hansom Cabs queuing at the covered entrance to both the original and extension sections of the station. The gates would have been installed in order to allow the LNWR to close the thoroughfare for one day per year to ensure that common rights to use the driveway were not established thereby ensuring the LNWR had property rights in perpetuity. The lower section of the roof was erected to cover the triangular area not covered by Cowper's great roof and was needed to conform with the original Act of Parliament that required all areas of the station to be under cover. On the right is part of the 'Midland' section of the station with out buildings provided on the original Platform 4 for station staff. Circa 1905
