Birmingham New Street Station: lnwrbns_str425
Looking East from the West end of Platform 10 with the soon
to be demolished passenger footbridge over Queens Drive in the middle distance
on 22nd May 1965. On the left is a Diesel Multiple unit on one of the few
services still operating into New Street station. The short sections of steel
tubes seen around the crane are in fact casings used as a temporary support
during the boring of piles which were needed under each column support the
massive structure that would entomb the station. On the end wall of the
multi-storey block on the right is the bull motif of the first rebuilt bull
ring which like the station was another 1960s design that failed to deliver the
promises of the town planners.
