Birmingham New Street Station: lnwrbns_str426a
Close up of image 'lnwrbns_str426' showing the access to the
spare carriage sidings and the horse & carriage landing on the East side of
the station. The use of carriage turntables played a major part in the
station's early methods of working the station and demonstrates that few
through trains were planned. The facility provided to accommodate the loading
and off-loading of horses and carriages provides an insight in to early train
travel as only the very rich would require to travel and if they did they
frequently took their own transport with them. These facilities and the spare
carriage sidings were later replaced by the LNWR parcels office.
