Birmingham New Street Station: lnwrbns_str434a
Close up of image 'lnwrbns_str434' showing the Stour Valley
bay lines with an unidentified ex-LMS 2P 4-4-0 locomotive being held by the
signal after coming off a local passenger train at Platform 2A. To the left and
out of sight were additional railway facilities including two lamp rooms, a
footwarmer room and mess facilities. Whilst the lamp rooms remained to the
rebuilding of the station, footwarmers had their origins in early Victorian
days when no carriage heating was provided. On the left of the road leading to
Platform 3 there appears to be a fogman's or Permanent Way hut and a telephone
box used by the fogman to call the signal box. Immediately to their left can be
seen a disposal pit between the rails probably more used by enginemen to oil
inside cylindered locomotives than to remove ash and clinker from the
firebox.
