Birmingham New Street Station: lnwrbns_str436
Looking along Platform 8 towards the West end of the station
and New Street No 4 Signal Cabin as the sun streams through the roof on 1st
August 1964. The station extension used by the Midland was built, unlike the
original LNWR station, with two canopies with each covering one set of tracks
as seen above. When first built the canopy provided sufficient daylight inside
the station because the central portion of the roof was glazed. However by the
1950s the lack of proper cleaning meant that most of the daylight penetrating
the gloom within the station entered through the open vent in the centre of the
canopy.
