Ex-LMS 2-6-0 'Stanier Crab' No 42976 at the head of a Type 8 through freight near Gosford Green in the early 1960s. British Railway's classified a Type 8 Through service as being 'a freight train NOT fitted with the automatic brake. Maximum speed 35 mph. Where fitted vehicles are required to be placed next to the engine and coupled up, this will be shewn in the appropriate regional train loading instructions. Built as LMS No 13276 by Crewe works in January 1934, No 42976 was first renumbered by the LMS in August 1934 as No 2976 and again by British Railways by adding 40,000 to the LMS number. It remained in service as No 42976 until July 1963 when it was withdrawn from 2B Nuneaton shed to be scrapped.
