Ex-LMS 4-6-0 Jubilee class No 45552 'Silver Jubilee' is seen
arriving at platform one with the Royal Train on a visit by the Queen to the
Coventry. Built originally as LMS No 5642 at Crewe works to Lot 165 in May 1934
it swapped its identity in April 1935 with No 5552 - the founding member of the
class - and named Silver Jubilee in honour of the Silver Jubilee celebrations
of King George V. This was undertaken by the railway authorities because No
5642 was progressing through the shops and could be given the extra
embellishments of a black gloss livery, silver steam pipes and raised numbers
on the cab sides. Whilst losing its special livery it did retain the raised
silver numerals during its service for British Railways and was retired from
Crewe North shed in September 1964 and scrapped by TW Ward of Beighton near
Sheffield in April 1965.
