Mr John James King and a fellow worker standing in front of
one of the many horses stabled at Coventry station. It is thought by Christine
Thomas that the photograph must have been taken quite early in his career,
probably early 1890s. Horses played an important role on the railways. In
addition to be used for shunting wagons they were primarily required to act as
dray horses, to distribute and collect the goods being transferred by railway.
The attire of both men with their long aprons would indicate that they are in
fact draymen. The lack of a harness would indicate that the horse is not being
used immediately to carry out such duties yet the photograph is clearly taken
away from the goods yard. The wall and railings as well as the pavement and
road indicate that its part of Coventry city which had been built some years
previous and is not therefore Eaton Road which can be seen when comparing the
above to image 'lnwrcov603' or 'lnwrcov646'.
