Ex-MR 4-4-0 2P Class 483 No 40443 stands at platform 1 on a
southbound ordinary passenger train circa 1949. Built as Midland Railway No 443
by Derby works in July 1893, No 40443 was to remain in service until January
1961 when it was withdrawn from 18A Toton shed to be scrapped by A Loom of
Spondon, Derby. The headlamp code displayed, a single lamp high on the smokebox
door, indicates that the locomotive is at the head of a Class 2 working which
according to the 1937 LMS rule book describes an 'Ordinary passenger train,
or break-down van train not going to clear the line. Branch passenger train
(where authorised). Rail motor or motor train with engine leading (When running
with driving compartment leading rail motors or motor trains will carry the
headlamp on the same bracket as used for the tail lamp).'
