An unidentified LNWR 4-4-2T 'Precursor Tank' runs bunker first through Coventry on the down through line. On the right is an unidentified LNWR 5ft 6in 2-4-2T locomotive, also running bunker first, entering the down platform with a service from Leamington Spa Avenue station. The carriage sidings were at the east end end of the station, adjacent to the branch line to Leamington and opposite the station so its possible that one or both locomotives are shunting carriage stock. The 4-4-2T 'Precursor Tank' class was developed from Whales Precursor passenger engines although with smaller driving wheels. They were used on suburban passenger services in the London, Birmingham and Manchester areas. The 5ft 6in 2-4-2T class were designed to replace the Samson 2-4-0s on local and branch line passenger work. They were the tank engine counterparts of the Precusor class 2-4-0 and 160 were built in 1890-7. They had steel buffer beams, metal brake blocks, and circular smoke box. Mike Christensen |
