Ex-LNWR 2-4-2T No 46654 propels a motor train from Nuneaton across the junction towards Leamington

Ex-LNWR 2-4-2T No 46654 propels a motor train from Nuneaton across the junction towards Leamington. Built as LNWR No 2130 by Crewe works in September 1893, it was renumbered in August 1928 by the LMS as No 6654 and again in December 1948 by BR as No 46654 which it retained until September 1953 when it was withdrawn from 2C Warwick (Milverton) Shed. The edge of Coventry's down platform can just be seen in the foreground on the right, giving a measure of the extent to which the up and down platforms were still staggered. Leamington trains could only use just over half the length of the up platform because the junction crossing started well before the end of the platform. The lifting bar inside the rail of the nearest line was a clearance bar worked by lever No 35 in Coventry No 1 Signal Cabin. Before the points beyond could be moved, this bar had to be swung up through the flangeway, thus proving that no vehicle was still on or very close to the points.
