Ex-LMS 2-6-2T 3P No 40208 is seen topping up with water from the water column located at the Birmingham end of the down platform. Built as LMS No 208 by Crewe works in April 1938, the locomotive was renumbered as No 40208 by BR in December 1948 which it retained until October 1961 when it was withdrawn from 9E Trafford Park. The LNWR signal sited at the end of the down platform (Platform 2) survived until 1962 as did the even older water column, which was the original L&BR installation. The column had been extended upwards to cope with the increasing height of locomotive tenders and bunkers by the simple expedient of bolting on an additional section of pipe. To get to the column, locomotives had to draw well forward off the end of the platform resulting in a tender engine being fully foul of the down through line.
